The Fairy Pools
Take a dip in the magical and enchanted Fairy Pools located on the Isle of Skye. At the end of a single-track dusty road surrounded by looming mountains and epic landscapes you will discover a series of spectacular waterfalls, rock pools and underwater arches.
Hike along the winding trail, where you will pass hundreds of rock formations creating wonderful crystal-clear blue and green falls, which are said to contain many magical properties! The Isle of Skye is renowned for its ‘fairylore’ due to the legend that the Chief of Clan Macleod married a fairy princess, hence why so many places in this region use the word ‘fairy’ in their name.
The many tributaries of the River Brittle which originate from the Cuillin mountain peaks, feed the pools with natural spring water, creating the most magical setting for wild swimming in the icy waters. Another urban legend surrounding the area is that the mythological water creatures known as Selkies visit here, disguised as large seals during the day, who then transform into human form at night to swim in the pools and bathe in the light of a full moon.
Some of the largest and most impressive waterfalls are located at the start of the trail, but if you continue along the gravel path to the upper fairy pools you will find many miniature waterfalls cascading over the rim. Take a refreshing dip if you dare, before saying goodbye to this magical and picturesque realm!
