Strawberry Hill House

If you enjoy gothic architecture, then a trip to Strawberry Hill House is a must. It’s truly off the beaten track on the outskirts of London and is certainly one of the more unusual and quirky places to see.

The house is known as the ‘little gothic castle’ of Horace Walpole (son of the first official Prime Minister in England) and is exquisitely designed taking cues from St. Paul’s Cathedral and the archaic tombs of Westminster Abbey. It was built during the 18th century when Walpole decided to transform a modest pair of cottages by adding extraordinary turrets, extravagant towers and striking arched windows to create his fantasy Gothic Revival Villa.

As you enter you are greeted by the impressive staircase hall which took inspiration from Prince Arthur’s tomb in Worcester Cathedral and is finished with mythical creatures on its balustrades. As you move through the house make sure to admire the eclectic range of boldly coloured stained-glass windows, which showcase everything from biblical and historic scenes to legendary beasts and wizards.

However, the room which brings many people to Strawberry Hill, is its wonderous dark library. The walls are adorned with pointed gothic bookcases including hundreds of antique scribings, whilst the ceiling is overtaken by medieval designs, completely immersing you in Walpole’s gothic vision. There are many rooms to explore around the house but the library is, in my opinion, by far the most impressive. Another worthy mention, in compete juxtaposition, is the elaborate and flamboyant Gallery with blood red walls, gold ornate decoration and many outstanding portraits hanging on display.

I really enjoyed roaming around the house at my own pace, but you can also book onto one of their tours to delve more deeply into the history with one of their excellent tour guides.

Tip: Make sure to check their website for opening hours as currently the house is only open from Wednesday to Sunday each week.
