The Fairy Glen

Enchanting, otherworldly and mythical are words that all come to mind when describing the Fairy Glen. Completely off the beaten path you will find this magical realm located on the Isle of Skye in the Trotternish Peninsula not far from the village of Uig.

The storied and dramatic hillside landscape is said to have been created over 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age and has honed its extraordinary shape from further landslides and glacial movements.

The round topped hills, unique rock formations and stone circle arrangements create a scene which looks like it could be pulled straight out of a fairy-tale. The storybook setting has earned the mysterious name of ‘The Fairy Glen’, with some saying that the picturesque landscape is inhabited by fairies and that their laughter can be heard if you listen hard enough… (although there are no definitive legends relating to this fact associated with the glen which can be traced).

If you are driving here, park in the nearby car park and then enjoy your time climbing to the tops of the numerous cone shaped mounds for some breath-taking vantage points of the valley and even make your way up to one of the highest points, which is nicknamed the ‘Fairy Castle’.

The miniature landscape is truly fascinating and a natural wonder to be enjoyed by all - even if you don’t believe in the Scottish fairy-lore!
