J’s Seafood Dock

If you are visiting the historic French Market and you enjoy local seafood, then there’s one place that can’t be missed - J’s Seafood Dock. This no-frills market stall serves up some of the best freshly prepared seafood in the city including raw and charbroiled oysters, shrimp, crab and crawfish!

You’ll find J’s situated in the buzz of the main thoroughfare, easily recognised by its traditional signage advertising their creole shrimp tacos, jambalaya and chef’s specials! If you haven’t heard of the term ‘creole cooking’ before, it’s a blend of French, West African, Spanish and Native American influences, which has become synonymous with Louisiana.

Personally, I’d never tasted charbroiled oysters, which are a firm favourite amongst New Orleans locals, so they were top of my list to try. These are grilled oysters covered in a buttery cheese sauce with a hint of spice that makes them even more delicious! Alongside this we ordered the soft-shell crab (which was a highlight) and the crawfish tails which were also very delicious! Please note that if you are visiting New Orleans and want to try one of their famous Crawfish boils then you need to visit between the peak months of March, April or May when they are in season.

To prevent disappointment, I’d definitely recommend a stop here for an early lunch as they are known to sell out of the most popular items each day… a testament to how fantastic the seafood is here!
