Halloween Houses

New Orleans is world renowned for its spectacular decorations during spooky season and if you do decide to visit at this magical time of year, there are three Halloween houses in particular which can’t be missed.

The Skeleton House

This imposing mansion, located at 6000 St Charles Avenue, transforms into The Skeleton House each Halloween by displaying a variety of satirical skeletons over every inch of its front lawn, trees and fence line. The skeletons draw in visitors from across the city and provide a witty yet spooky display paying homage to public figures, movie characters and current events. You will find skeletons such as: Marrow-Lyn Monroe, Luke Skullwalker, Beauty and D'ceased, Skullett O'Hara, Pelvis Presley, Napoleon Bone-apart and so on.

Louellen and Darryl Berger have been showcasing their spooky decorations for over 20 years and always say that they don’t want anyone to find the skeletons scary but want people to in fact find them funny!

Ghost Manor

Located in the Garden District on Magazine Street, the Queen Anne style Victorian property owned by the Gentry family is each year transformed into a Halloween fright fest. Vast amounts of hand carved pumpkins, spiders, tombstones and skeletons decorate the outside of the house in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Make sure to check out their listings for their show nights too, as the family love to create special effects, custom animatronics and bespoke lighting designs to create a ‘spook-tacular’ evening for all to enjoy! Expect ghosts flying between windows, singing skeletons on the porch and spectacular lighting displays!

The Kraken House

Slightly off the beaten path, in the Lakeview neighbourhood near New Orleans City Park, you will find the Kraken House. The Soliman Family are the masterminds behind the display and work on making it more and more elaborate each year. The house creates the perfect framing for the display, with two 12-foot skeletons acting as the gate keepers, pumpkins running up each step to the front door and the octopus style tentacles looming over the balcony and up to the roof. It’s not a surprise that the house soon became a viral sensation and has received a huge amount of attention from the press and local photographers, one of whom actually christened it ‘The Kraken House’. Due it is popularity the family usually start putting up the Halloween decorations in August and yet still have people visiting throughout the rest of the year, asking why they are not up!
